Beauty – The Brittnees

From: thebrittnees | January 28, 2010  | 1,732 views

The second music video of our band project The Brittnees, a green screen experiment with a lot of effects, costumes and real fun making it. The song is about beauty ideals, role models, what women think they should do – or are actually doing – to be liked. The idea is to illustrate this play of role that women have brought to perfection, on the one hand to seduce, on the other to manipulate, while hopelessly knowing that beauty will fade, that no-one and nothing can change this fact, that being alone is an essential experience of every human being and that there is simply nothing that can save us from decay. It is partly ironic for taking looks and beauty so seriously, but on the same hand an expression for desperation and insecurity.

Dante Alighieri: Paradiso: Canto XI

definitions from Oxford Dictionaries Online

Canto XI

O Thou insensate care of mortal men,
[Insensate: Lacking physical sensation]

How inconclusive are the syllogisms
[Syllogisms: Deductive reasoning as distinct from induction]

That makes thee beat thy wings in downward flight!

One after laws and one to aphorisms
[Aphorisms: a pithy observation that contains a general truth]

Was going, and one following the priesthood,

And one to reign by force or sophistry,
[Sophistry: the use of fallacious arguments, especially with the intention of deceiving]

And one in theft, and one in state affairs,

One in the pleasures of the flesh involved

Wearied himself, one gave himself to ease;

When I, from all these things emancipate,

[Emancipate: Set free especially for legal, social, or political restrictions]

Letter to Nora Barnacle [excerpt]

To Nora

[…]

Get ready. Put some warm-brown-linoleum on the kitchen and hang a pair of red common curtains on the windows at night. Get some kind of a cheap common comfortable armchair for your lazy lover. Do this above all, darling, as I shall not quit that kitchen for a whole week after I arrive, reading, lolling, smoking, and watching you get ready the meals and talking, talking, talking, talking to you. O how supremely happy I shall be! God in heaven, I shall be happy there! I figlioli, il fuoco, una buona mangiata, un caffè nero, un Brasil (charuto), il Piccolo della Sera, e Nora, Nora mia, Norina, Noretta, Noruccia ecc ecc…

Eva and Eileen must sleep together. Get some place for Georgie. I wish Nora and I had two beds for night-work. I am keeping and shall keep my promise, love. Time fly on quickly! I want to go back to my love, my life, my star, my little strange-eyed Ireland!

A hundred thousand kisses, darling!
